Q: What if I don’t garden?

A: While many of our members enjoy gardening, the Carlsbad Garden Club’s primary function is to be eco-friendly and provide scholarships and grants to worthy members of the local community.

Q: How much does annual membership cost?

A: Membership is $30 per year for an individual.  The funds collected from membership fees go towards our scholarships after covering the club’s operating expenses which are minimal.

Q: What does membership cover?

A: Membership entitles you to attend our lectures and events and contributes towards the grants and scholarships we offer.  Some of our events such as potlucks ask that you bring food.  In contrast, our lectures are free of charge.

Q: How do I join?

A: Please click for information how to join the club.

Q: How do I apply for a scholarship or a grant?

A: Please contact Administration@CarlsbadGardendClub.org

Q: What sort of projects do you support with your grants and scholarships?

A: The Club encourages projects and individuals that benefit horticulture and the environment.  Click on Activities for more information.

Q: Do I need to be a resident of Carlsbad to join your club?

A: No!  We have members from surrounding cities!  We welcome men and women with an interest in gardening.  Older children with a serious interest in gardening are permitted to attend in the company of a parent or guardian.

Q: Do I have to be a master gardener or an expert to join your club?

A: No!  We have gardeners of all levels in our club.  Some have lived locally their entire lives and others are transplants; some are beginners and others have years of experience.  We welcome your questions.

Q: How do I get anything to grow in this clay?

A:  You can try a raised bed, incorporate soil amendments, compost, or other organic amendments/soil conditioners to the soil to improve drainage and reduce compaction issues.  Also consider plants that are already well-adapted to growing in clay.

Q: Why can’t I grow the same plants here in Carlsbad that I grew in my hometown?  I am from a northern state.

A:  Our growing zones are 9, 10, and 11.  We live in an area with high heat in the dry summer, and low chilling hours in the winter.  Many traditional garden plants cannot tolerate these conditions.  Read the labels carefully on any plant you are considering purchasing, or consult a garden center/store for advice.  We will also be happy to give you recommendations on plants that will work for you!

Q: I am looking for a specific member or officer of your club.  How can I get in touch with them?

A:  Click on Members first and see if the individual is listed.  If you are a current paid member, you should have access to the published membership directory list with everyone’s contact information.  This is not a public list, due to privacy/spam concerns.  If you are not a member of the club, use the Contact Us link and we will forward your question on to the appropriate person.
