Here are 3 of the 4 newly installed Officers. President Sharon Kent-Lanes was missing due to a family event. From left to right: Treasurer Fran Whitton, Secretary Ethel Nemetz and Parliamentarian Gretchen Ashton. They were installed by Palomar Director George Speers. He used a floral bouquet indicating that although their tasks are represented by separate flowers, the bouquet, all of them together, make a more beautiful picture or effect.
Our first meeting of the year featured Chefs Wendy Hileman CEO and Greg Mantuano CFO of the Healthy Adventures Foundation. Their goal is to teach healthy cuisine that tastes great and is nutritional.Through seasonal fruits and vegetables, the emphasis was “eat to live”. After their demonstration, we got to eat the results. A happy start to the year.
In October, we toured Peder and Julie Norby’s estate which they named Heron House. The garden included sculpture, mosaic tiles, a vineyard (1 of only 3 in Carlsbad), gray water irrigation, and spectacular views of Agua Hedionda Lagoon. After the tour of the garden and of the award winning home, we got to sample his wine. President Sharon and Treasurer Fran shared a casual moment!
The Ohana Creations of Carlsbad and former President Gretchen Ashton are teaching “how to make a haku, a Polynesian head lei. You can see some of the lovely results.
The Club went on a docent led tour of the Japanese Gardens at Balboa Park.
In April, we toured the herb and vegetable garden which supplies the 2 West restaurants, the West and Bistro West. Our guide was Executive Chef Eugenio Martignago who is responsible for both kitchens. Besides explaining why their food is so good, we gathered lots of good ideas for our own gardens. A no host lunch followed at Bistro West…double yum!

The Discovery Group had a very busy year. Here are 7 highlights. To the left, we met at the garden of Maxine Levine (September), we toured “Miniland” at Legoland (October), and then onto the new garden of Mary Tornborg (November), and then the Group posed at the Gardens of Self Realization in February.
Below these words, we had the opportunity to tour a private bonsai garden in Solana Beach (January), see the garden of Star Winetz in April (that’s her daughter in the picture) and finally propagating cuttings in Anne Smith’s garden (July) for the plant sale in October.
